What's in a name?

"The change will allow the college to be more competitive in the recruitment of students locally, nationally and internationally, as it clearly identifies an institution where students can choose to earn a baccalaureate degree."
- Chancellor Clyde Sakamoto, discussing Maui Community College's new name in a February 18 release

So what's the new name?

University of Hawaii Maui College
See? Couldn't be more clear

    Why do the words

Another interesting fact: "University" and "College" are 17 letters total, "of Hawaii Maui" is 15. Less than half the name was dedicated to the actual location, the rest to confirming Maui is a second rate college instead of what they claimed to be seeking: "to be more competitive in the recruitment of students locally, nationally and internationally."

How about this: University of Hawaii, Maui Campus? Just like the other campuses, no? Why did "college" have to stay? I hope the Regents work for free, otherwise I think we overpaid for their efforts.

Title of my post was cut off, should have read:

"Why do the words "University" and "College" both appear in the name? Which is it?"

Guess they had a buncha folks that thought it was MCCC (Maui Community Correctional Center).

I think this was done as a way to keep the different acronyms for the various campuses distinct. Now, Maui won't get confused with Manoa.

You can have various Colleges in a University. Like the Business College or Engineering College. I think it would make more sense to refer to it as a Campus than a College.

Has become my new favorite part of the paper. Always good/sad stuff in here. Kinda like fish in a barrel, but no one else is shooting them!
