March 03, 2010 | 04:55 PM Director Alexis Dascoulias describes Maui OnStage's latest project, a production of To Kill a Mockingbird as "broccoli" theater. Meaning the goal isn't flashiness or empty calories, but rather to continue to nourish the meaningful conversation that this play originally inspired. After all, only 50 years ago, black Americans couldn't vote in some states, while today we proudly support our first African American president. If you haven't read Harper Lee's seminal work since middle school, it may be time hit the refresh button on this timely, beautiful and clever story. Here, Scout Finch and Jem are played by a real brother-and-sister team, Marley and Zeb Mehring, with Don Carlson as the iconic Atticus Finch. And there are plenty of opportunities to get that serving of theatrical veggies—To Kill a Mockingbird plays Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, with Sunday matinees at 3pm. 244-6969.
