Maui Slam Poetry

Thursday (March 25), 9:30pm, Casanova, Makawao, $5

Pick1

March 23, 2010 | 05:37 PM
In the manner that almost all genius ideas originate—on a whim—now-slam star Kealoha stopped by a San Franciscan poetry slam and the creative hemisphere of his brain held an immediate, successful coup. This was after earning a BS in Applied Nuclear Physics at MIT—his thesis was titled "Proliferation Issues Associated With the Transmutation and Stabilization of Plutonium"—and dipping his toes in the business world as a consultant, as well as working at a surf instructor. But a poetic career change called, and since then he's proliferated multitudes of poetry slams in both California and Hawaii, further spreading the word by founding Hawai'i Slam, Youth Speaks Hawai'i, First Thursdays (the world's largest slam) and regularly competing in the National Poetry Slam. If you aren't too intimidated by the mental might of Kealoha, come to Maui Slam's March installment, or to just watch and soak up the wordy wisdom. If you're really shy, join in on the theme of the night by throwing on a Mexican wrestling mask. That's right, kids from MIT like Nacho Libre too. After the slam scrimmage, DJ Boomshot spins his own brand of brainpower for a "champions" dance party. www.mauislam.com www.kealohapoetry.com 280-5096
