Pick3

March 23, 2010 | 05:42 PM
I may be guilty of unabashed adoration of all things Upcountry, but it's for good reason. Case in point: A cruise through the green, winding drive toward Ulupalakua—gazing at a patchwork palate of ochre and pale indigo, with the undulating wet and dry of late Spring—is a delight anytime. But this Sunday is special as "Ulupalakua Remembers" with a unique seasonal event that highlights not only the culinary offerings of the area, but its rich history, too. "[T]he Paniolo Hall of Fame, a traveling exhibit on loan from the O'ahu Cattleman's Association, [consists] of photo portraits, short biographies and oral history interviews—recogniz[ing] 106 paniolo from around the islands who have contributed to Hawai'i's legendary paniolo history," says event publicist Yuki Sugimura. Sure to be the highlight of the guided historical walking tours is the unusual, event-only look at the area's old jail. Jazz Alley TV and MauiFEST Hawai'i hook up the entertainment, starting off on the winery grounds with the North Shore Ukulele Boyz (12pm), followed by ukulele virtuoso Derick Sebastian (12:30-1:30pm) and concluding with the famed John Keawe (2:20-3:20pm). Meanwhile, performing at the Ulupalakua Ranch Store Deli & Grill is Braddah Francis Koahou (12-3pm)—stop by and you'll not only get your fill of quality local music, but eats like elk burgers and steak chili (11am-4pm). And of course, no trip to Ulupalakua is complete without sipping on the complimentary samplings at the winery's King's Cottage. www.mauiwine.com www.ulupalakuaranch.com 877-878-6058
