Frédéric and Julio
Sunday (April 18) & Friday (April 23), MACC

If by age 11 you were performing piano concertos for the Tsar of Russia (Alexander I), you and Frédéric François Chopin have something in common. Probably not (no offense). But connecting with this king of the keys is easy enough, in that the subtle, narrative nuances of his compositions have made him synonymous with Romantic music (hello? he invented the piano ballade). Romance—and the music inspired by it—is something we can all relate to, and Chopin's work resonates still. So much so, we're celebrating his birthday, 200 years later. This Sunday, pianist Thomas Purviance of the Westminster Conservatory of Music in Princeton, New Jersey, will take to the ivories and showcase some of Chopin's work. This, to the backdrop of intriguing historical context, as provided by Purviance, in none other than the cozy venue of the McCoy Studio Theater. (3:30pm, $11/$22). Also coming up at the MACC: Julio Iglesias, performing next Friday (April 23). Iglesias will show Castle Theater patrons why, for 40 years, he's reigned as modern master of the romantic ballad. Then amorous couples can take it from there (just wait 'til you're out of the theater). 242-7469, mauiarts.org
