Open daily for lunch and dinner

Growing up vegetarian with little access to beef, my mom used to tell me how hard it was for her to give up cheeseburgers. Since she had sacrificed this worldly delight she expected me to, so it wasn't until later—and with much guilt to overcome—that I embraced my own obsession with burgers. Since then, I've never looked back.

When I heard Toby Shadle of Fat Daddy's BBQ had opened up a window-service burger place next to Starbucks at the Kukui Mall in Kihei, I waited for the next burger craving to come and headed south. I figured the beef has to be good; Toby knows how to do red meat. And sure enough, Fat Boy Burgers lives up to its name, serving 12 different cleverly named burgers plus a build-your-own option for the creative or picky.

Options on the burger change according to sauces and cheeses, and they have eight different sauces to choose from. I couldn't resist the Californication ($9), with roasted green chili, avocado, roasted garlic red onion and Monterey jack with a chipotle lime sauce. I was instantly in burger heaven. The patty is hand-made and when it showed up on my plate it was a work of art, the green chili glowing, the avo plentiful, the red onion looking like it was sliced with a mandolin. The chipotle lime sauce is aioli-based and has a nice smoky tang; it goes really well with the sweet fries, too.

The Fat Daddy burger ($9) comes with onion rings, smoked bacon, cheddar and Fat Daddy BBQ Sauce. The onion rings are worth noting, tempura battered to perfection. The Fat Boy ($8) is a classic cheeseburger, while the Menehune ($4) is the junior option. They call them mini burgers, but my four-year-old couldn't finish it even with a big appetite. The sweet fries—made with sweet potato—are a great twist on the traditional burger accoutrement.

Service is friendly and quick; you order at the window then wait on the deck overlooking South Kihei Road. We ate on the patio and did some people watching, but they will wrap it to go as well. Though good luck eating one of these babies in your car.
