July 07, 2010 | 03:52 PM For any wild wahine with a six-string soul, to be called "one mean bitch guitar player" by Keith Richards himself ought to give you enough energy to power an amp. For blues musician Nicole Fournier, it was indeed powerful encouragement, but with or without a Rolling Stone's stamp of approval, she's a fret force to be reckoned with. In 1992—the same year she both jammed with and earned the accolades of Richards—she was nominated for Best Female Vocalist at the Bay Area Blues Awards and sat in with John Lee Hooker for a sold-out Seattle show. From there, she's strung up a hearty list of honors—like multiple nominations for Best Electric Guitar and Best Female Vocalist from the Washington Blues Society, and being named "Tacoma Blueswoman of the Year" in 1996—and has played with the likes of Big Bones, Deacon Jones and Harvey Mandel. This weekend, she'll add Maui's own The Vince Esquire Band to the list of notable collaborators, and will show audiences what that Keith Richards guy was raving about.
