Healthy Happenings Around the Valley Isle

Be Green and Envied

Entirely free of any predisposed physical prowess—save perhaps, being an excellent sports spectator—my first and only athletic endeavor in high school was as a member of the KKHS riflery team. I joined not only to learn how to shoot guns (well, BB guns) from a cool guy in camo, but because it's the only sport that requires lots of lying down. I was somehow under the impression that—through sheer lack of participants—I was on the varsity team (though the truth to that statement I myself highly question). Whether you're like me—decades overdue for cardio—or are of the enviable athletic breed, you'll want to check out the new fitness group hosted by Green Banana Café and Yogurt Bar owners, Dean Wong and David Ward. Starting this (and every) Sunday, members interested in maintaining (or discovering) their beach bods will convene at GBC for a 7am (leisurely) shotgun, toward Sprecks, past the Kaunoa Senior Center and down Stable Road. If you want, you can cool off with a return swim to base camp. Heck you could skate or skip or do whatever's your fancy, so long as you're motivated—and help motivate others—to move and have fun. As encouragement, Wong and Ward will give participants discount coupons for their healthy, frozen treats and granola parfaits. Sweet. [Every Sunday (beginning August 1), 7am, Green Banana Cafe, 579-9130] Keeping with the North Shore theme of health and wellness, Pa'ia's Flatbread Co. hosts a benefit night for nursing students of UH Maui College. Raising funds to support their clinical trip to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children on Oahu—a requirement to complete RN program curriculum—the group's silent auction features prizes you'll covet like local art, jewelry and accessories, music, HGA items, surf supplies, a SUP from NAISH, a hand-shaped short board, gift certs to local eateries, hotel stays, boat and helicopter tours, and even laser hair removal, botox and massage. [Tuesday (August 3), 5-10pm, Flatbread Co., 579-8989] Naturally, we can't be healthy unless our planet is. Enter the Hawaiian Heritage and Environmental Sustainability Fair; which—previously held in Pa'ia—heads south for its third celebration. This Saturday, the fair features demos on solar dehydrators and generators, plus a six-foot ahupu'a model and sounds by The Eazy. And, partnering with the Pacific Whale Foundation, the fair encourages you to volunteer prior to the fair's midday kickoff to help restore the Ko`ie`ie Fishpond (for more on how to help Ko'ie'ie, see Announcements in our Da Kine Calendar). [Saturday (July 31), 12am-5pm, Kalama Park Pavillion]
