Wailuku First Friday and PWF Wild Dolphin Sand Sculpture Contest

August 04, 2010 | 05:44 PM The monthly Wailuku First Friday event puts a polish on a town that I once (and best) heard described as "a diamond in the rough." Festivities have expanded from Market to Main Street. This month's "Endless Summer" theme includes Basic Bounce performing at the Main Street Promenade, Gene and Shea Argel in front of and Jim Powlan inside of Café O'Lei, Head High at the Banyan Tree Park and Gabe & Friends at the Wailuku Coffee Company. Plus, don't miss the Poetry Slam at Gallerie Ha, the Dino Miranda art showcase at Maui Thing and (if it's your thing) the Spanish wine tasting and paella, also at Café O'Lei. Too, the Iao Theater hosts the fourth and final installment of their "4 Funny Films" series. Screening Mel Brooks's Blazing Saddles—starring Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder, Medeline Kahn, Slim Pickens, Harvey Korman and Mel Brooks—the show is preceded by a panel discussion (yours truly, somehow included) and other fun surprises. The event officially begins Friday (August 6) at 5:30pm—continuing through to 8pm (so there's still time to jet West for Tom Green's stand-up)—with Market Street closed to traffic at 6pm (thanks, MPD!) and film screening at 7pm. Registration is free and sculptors can compete individually or in groups. The PWF's got swell prizes for winners (and free wild dolphin guides for all participants). Categories include "Best Overall Entry by a Family or Group," "Best Individual or Group Kids," (for keiki 12 and under), "Most Realistic Dolphin," "Most Creative Entry" and "Funniest Entry." Arrive early to register at Keawakapu Beach, in front of the Mana Kai Beach Resort; the competition runs from 9-11am and prizes will be announced at 11:45am. [249-8811, pacificwhale.org]
