October 14, 2010 | 10:01 AM Sveltly muscular and impossibly graceful, ballerinas (ballerinos or danseurs, for men), exemplify the potential of the human form. Dance is the secondary color that emerges when art and athleticism meld, and the balletomanes behind Complexions Contemporary Ballet are a rainbow of world-class innovators; wielding the skills of traditional formats (from a full range of disciplines) with the belief that "dance should be about removing boundaries, not reinforcing them." The company recently concluded a month-long tour of Australia and New Zealand, and stops in Hawaii—for just three performances in the 808 and only one on Maui—en route home to New York for a series of performances ahead of an Italian tour slated for early next year. Co-founder and artistic director Desmond Richardson has choreographed over 80 ballets in his career, and one of his notable pieces comes during the second act titled "Hissy Fits," featuring the music of Johann Sebastian Bach—which, orthodox as it sounds, is likely anything but. On the other hand, the third act, titled "Rise," is set the the Emerald Isle pop-rock of U2 (which, I'm sure, gave big-ego Bono a big boner), and is sure to stand in contrast to "Mercy," the first act's globally sourced compilation of music, and the perfect introduction to this troupe's commitment to transcending "style, period, venue [and] culture... creating an open, continually evolving form of dance that reflects the movement of our world." 242-7469 mauiarts.org, complexionsdance.org
