October 21, 2010 | 10:57 AM OK, I'll admit it: when I first heard Hal Sparks was coming to Maui as part of the Maui Celebrity Series, my reaction was, "Hal who?" What's amazing is that I have watched literally hundreds of hours of I Love the [Insert Recent Decade] on VH1, occasionally in a state of semi-coherence. And slinging quips on those shows—along with E! network's Talk Soup—is Sparks's claim to fame. That and a role on the critically acclaimed Queer As Folk, a show I have never watched (not that there's anything wrong with that). So what I realized is that I don't recognize Sparks because of his name, but rather because of what he's done. And really, when I think about it, a lot of my favorite performers are like that—people I could pick out of a lineup and say, "Yeah, I know that dude, he's funny," but if I had to introduce them to someone at a party it'd be awkward. Sparks will be joined at his Valley Isle appearance by Chino LaForge and DJ Aggressive Cane Spider—now there's a name I won't forget. 856-7973, www.mauicelebrityseries.com
