Lingle Versus the Legislature Again

Sinking to a New Furlough...

Last week, at a meeting of the cumbersomely named Legislative Federal Economic Stimulus Program Oversight Commission, chair Kate Stanley suggested Gov. Lingle didn't use federal dollars "in the most wise way" to end Furlough Fridays and put students back in the classroom.

Though Lingle spokesperson Linda Smith was there to defend her boss, the Governor couldn't resist issuing a snippy statement the following day, in which she called the meeting a "clumsily disguised" attempt to score political points ahead of the election.

Probably true—on both sides. Also true: now that Furlough Fridays are over—and with our schools facing significant ongoing challenges—bickering about the issue is pointless and unproductive. Of course, if Lingle and the legislature didn't have pointless, unproductive bickering, what would they have? - JS
