Paia Youth and Cultural Center Beachfest

December 08, 2010 | 03:18 PM
"The sun is shining, the grass is green / The orange and palm trees sway… / But it's December the twenty-fourth / And I am longing to be up North," are the oft-dropped opening lyrics from Irving Berlin's "White Christmas." If the North you long for is Maui's tradewinds-swept shore, and if the wintertime white you're dreaming of is the spume from mean waves, then Pa'ia Youth & Cultural Center's 14th annual Beachfest—an all-ages bodyboard and surf competition—is the event for you. Priding itself on being "cutting edge," the PYCC is a 17-year-old nonprofit on a mission to help da keiki. Thus, spectators are asked to keep this 'ohana-friendly event strictly alcohol-, tobacco- and drug-free. Registration in the competition not only supports the center, but includes a T-shirt, meal and the chance at tons of great giveaways and prizes. And, if you sign up by Friday, you'll save $10 off the $30 day-of registration fee. That's money you can use to enter yourself into an additional division (each $10 extra), which, BTW, are Menehune (9-14 yrs.), Juniors (15-17), Men's (18+), Women's Open (all ages), Freestyle Surf (all ages) and Drop Knee (all ages). 579-8354; pyccmaui.com
