Picks of the Week 3
Krishna Das

December 08, 2010 | 03:20 PM "You know, that's not the Universe speaking to you, Anu," my cocked-brow friend said when I showed him the cover of Krishna Das's Greatest Hits of the Kali Yuga, pointing out that if you exchanged every other letter in the words "Kali Yuga" it's an anagram for "Yagi Kula." What did he mean, it's not the Universe speaking to me?! The Universe speaks to me all the time! (And always in anagram form.) However, what the Universe did not tell me was what the "Kali Yuga" is, exactly (the anagram, I suppose, would be too complex). So I turned to Wikipedia: "Kali Yuga" means "age of vice" and "is the last of the four stages that the world goes through as part of the cycle of yugas described in Indian scriptures… traditionally thought to last 432,000 years." Wiki goes on to say that "Hindus believe that human civilization degenerates spiritually during the Kali Yugi… [which] is associated with the apocalyptic demon Kali." (Hmm… no longer feeling too good about that anagram). Wait? Why in the world would World music master Krishna Das (born Jeffrey Kagel) want to say he's got the greatest hits of an unfathomably dark era? I guess despite all my cosmic conversations, I have not done enough kirtan chanting to understand. But, if you are so enlightened/inclined, you ought to join KD at The Studio this Sunday. 575-9390; thestudiomaui.com
