Picks of the Week 4
Mark Twain Tonight
|
December 08, 2010 | 03:24 PM If your weekend is filled with but "butterfly idleness," why not make a themed day of it at the MACC's Sunday night showing of Mark Twain Tonight! with Emmy-winning actor Hal Holbrook? First, "rough it" up to the tip top of mount Haleakala for "the sublimest spectacle" of sunrise (Mark Twain did it), then pay a visit to the Bailey House Museum (Mark Twain stayed there), and all the while try to soak in everything you know to be true of this "loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored in any ocean." Hometown pride makes my heart skip a beat with every word in Mark Twain's Letters from Hawaii (University of Hawaii Press), and if you've worn out the spines of every title Twain has penned, I'll then recommend the Bible-sized biography Mark Twain: A Life by the wonderfully be-lisped Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ron Powers (who was born in Twain's hometown of Hannibal, Missouri). As for Holbrook, he's been Samuel Clemens incarnate for 56 years, and if you spring for the VIP package ($150), you'll get a pre-show dinner courtesy of Vasi's Gourmet Catering, and a meet and greet with Holbrook himself after the show. 242-7469;mauiarts.org
