Cecilio and Kapono with Maui Pops Orchestra

January 12, 2011 | 02:19 PM Lately, I've been toying with the notion that I can trace every opinion to some early-life occurrence. So when wondering why, if I had to give harmonies a shape and flavor, it'd be a red, round sweetness that's just a touch tart, I've traced it to this toddlerdom thought: When my single mom was still dating my soon-to-be-dad (who then lived on Oahu), he took us to a Cecilio & Kapono show at dimly lit venue that I can only recall as being the color of gingersnap cookies. The waitress brought me a big cup of maraschino cherries to keep me satiated and silent, and though I was little more than three, I've regretted that I didn't express my utmost mahalo (so if you're out there, nice lady, thank you). In thinking about how this memory has lingered, I recognize it's mostly a testament to C&K themselves. Their iconic harmonics were likely the first I'd ever heard, and as a prodigious patron of the arts I've been indelibly shaped by their performance. And I'm not alone. C&K are true living legends, and this week they'll be accompanied by our friends at the Maui Pops Orchestra, who (if you'll forgive me) provide the proverbial cherry on top. 242-7569, mauiarts.org
