February 16, 2011 | 04:02 PM From glitter and macaroni masterpieces in refrigerator frames to works worth millions on the Christie's auction block, art is all around us - and anything can be art. If you're ready to engage in the serious business of art appreciation, there's no better time than this weekend. Starting Centrally, it's your last chance to check out the Schaefer International Gallery exhibit "Legacy of Land" - a collaboration between the MACC and Maui Coastal Land Trust (closes on Saturday, February 19). Twenty-four artists were invited to create works inspired by a specific piece of conserved property on Maui, and the result is paintings, sculptures, multi-media video and textile installations. One intriguing feature of the exhibit is the featured artists' field journals, wherein each documented their thoughts and inspirations. Art happenings always abound island-wide, but aficionados will do best by filling the ol' guzzler and heading out Hana side. If you're Source-savvy (and you should be - all the cool kids are), you've probably already planned your weekend at Camp Keanae (Friday-Monday, February 18-21). Modeled after Burning Man, Source doesn't allow spectators - everyone's part of creating and collaborating. Source also puts the "art" in "barter", and participants are expected to "share the ethos of the gift economy". For a different kind of intimate art experience, keep winding down Hana Highway and enjoy a self-guided open studio tour in the first-ever Maui Open Studios (Saturday-Sunday, February 19-20). Eleven East side artists round out and final weekend of the event, which gives you a unique opportunity to meet creative types in their work spaces.
