Picks of the Week 4
Nas and Damian Marley
|
February 23, 2011 | 01:41 PM Maui plays host to its share of reggae and hip-hop concerts (more often reggae). But it isn't often the two genres blend. So reggae fans and rap aficionados alike should be excited for this weekend's Nas and Damian Marley show. The "Distant Relatives" Hawaii tour—sponsored by the BAMP Project—marks the first time the duo will perform together in the islands. "Distant Relatives" is unique among American- Jamaican artist collaborations in that Nas and Marley completed an entire album together. (To download one of the the album's songs for free, visit distantrelatives.com.) It's a daring feat to mix two distinct styles, but if anyone can do it, it's these acclaimed artists. Marley was the first reggae musician to win a Grammy outside of the reggae category, while Nas has sold over 20 million records. Tickets are available through the MACC's box office, Green Banana Cafe (Paia), Old Lahaina Book Emporium (Front Street, Lahaina) and Requests (Wailuku).
