Girls Day Offerings

March 02, 2011 | 02:05 PM If you've seen Akira Kurosawa's haunting film Dreams, your musings about March are undoubtedly technicolored by the vignette "The Peach Orchard." The story circles around Hina Matsuri, the Japanese Doll Festival commonly known as Girls' Day, celebrated on the third day of the third month and coinciding with Momo no Sekku, the Peach Blossom Festival. Locally, Kaanapali Beach Hotel is unsurpassed in its Girls' Day offerings. Their Sunday brunch features over 85 dishes, like grilled ahi with ginger and shitake mushroom sauce, tsukemono (pickled) vegetables and various types of mochi and manju. And in the lobby (just outside of the banquet hall's doors), you can explore a number of interactive demonstrations by the Japanese Cultural Society. The impressive doll collection of Trisha Goya Kapuaala (passed down from Faye Kashiwa Otsuka, from Atsuko Kashiwa) will proudly be on display, and the doll makers from Makawao Hongwanji will demonstrate their craft.
