Food & Drink 2

Bistro Casanova Pau Hana

March 16, 2011 | 02:11 PM
Location: Kahului, next to Central Pacific Bank, on the corner of Lono Avenue and Kaahumanu Avenue.

Decor: There is a no-frills elegance here, blue and cream hues evoke ocean and beach, reminding you that despite the hustle and bustle of Central Maui you're near the harbor. Look up and gaze at the beautiful ceiling murals reflected over the glass-topped tables, or turn your attention to the Piero Resta paintings. It's a great conversation starter, or a way to spend the time waitng for your drinks and food.

How to say "happy hour" in Italian: Ora dell' aperitivo. It's customary to meet for "aperitivo" in Italy, a tradition of stimulating the appetite (the practice of meeting for drinks in the evening before meals dates back to the Romans). You can also say "Facciamoci un aperitivo" ("Let's have an aperitif"); it's a casual hookup line. The Latin root of the word "aperire" means to begin, to open. Prosecco is a common aperitivo drink. Also common: having so much fun in aperitivo that you skip dinner.

Entertainment: Saturday night lounge music with vocalist and piano player Louise Lambert, 9pm to 11pm.

Grinds: Tapas start at 3pm and on Friday and Saturday night go through 11pm. The tapas menu changes, but you'll find oysters, pastas, crepes, soups and salads. The fritti are incredible. Dinner entrees include pastas, ossobuco and paella, plus the only great steak in Kahului. Lunch is 11am to 2:30pm. The full dinner menu is available from 5pm to 9:30pm Monday through Saturday. They run a MACC special: whenever there's major show you can get guaranteed delivery of the main course 15 minutes after ordering; it's $25 per person for a three-course prix fixe menu. And Iao Theatre is offering a Cats dinner and show special for $40, with all Iao and MACC ticket-holders getting happy hour prices at the bar after the show.

Happy hours: 4-6pm

Drink specials: $1 off beer, $5 carafes of chianti, pinot grigio, mojitos and margaritas.
