Elegant Afternoon Tea Benefit

If laughter is the best medicine, then why do doctors charge so much? Plus, a lot of them aren't even that funny. You know what else gives you the warm fuzzies? Good food. Oh, and helping people. This Sunday, you'll have the chance to do both of them, at once. Boom! First up is the 14th Annual Elegant Afternoon Tea benefiting Women Helping Women, held at the new Yokouchi Pavilion at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Catering will be done by the gloriously talented Bev Gannon, who promises to take you on a journey to Italy, India and Bali—via your taste buds. Ladies and gents, for much less than a plane ticket (not to mention a doctor's visit) you can dine like royalty and help end domestic violence. OK, maybe tea isn't your thing, but a good laugh is. Enter trash-talkin' Kathy Griffin, a self-proclaimed D-lister with two Emmys and all-around funny lady. Laughs + eats = good medicine. 242-7465; mauiarts.org /whwmaui.net / kathygriffin.net

    Total Contradiction
    April 10, 2011 | 10:39 AM

Having Kathy Griffin as the featured guest at this "elegant" event seems totally contradictory. Hey Maui Arts & Cultural Center, do you have a short memory? She publicly insulted Bristol Palin about her weight, commented that 2011 is the year for 16-year-old Willow Palin "to go down" and tweeted that Trig Palin, who has Down's Syndrome, is a "retard baby." I don't see how someone like this could "help end domestic violence" as this article proclaims. This is really bad.

    Classy
    April 12, 2011 | 12:29 PM

Compared to what the Palin family has said about everyone else in the country, Griffin is the epitome of class and decency.
A girl who gave birth out of wedlock, underage and is now receiving money for "abstinence," is the definition of a "total contradiction."
