Citizen Cope at Maui Theatre

… If Citizen Cope (a.k.a Clarence Greenwood) had been booked last Saturday—instead of this Saturday (May 28)—I might have been inclined to buy into all the ridiculous rapture business. I mean, look at him. Kind of Jesus-like, right? And, my favorite quote about him (from the Chicago Sun-Times) brands him "a less smarmy John Mayer crossed with Stevie Wonder and a hint of Randy Newman." If that isn't immaculate perfection, I don't know what is. And on Citizen Cope's eponymous 1992 debut, in addition to songs titled "Salvation" and "Comin' Back," there's a track with the right idea about end-of-the-world warfare: "Let the Drummer Kick." Then just give the guitarists and bassists (literal) axes, and saxophonists sickles, and you've got a grand start to one hell of an army against darkness. [$45-$75; 8-10:30pm; Maui Theatre, 878 Front St., Lahaina; 856-7973; mauicelebrityseries.com, ticketweb.com]
