A Leg Up

Fact: Superheroes wear silly costumes. Why? Because they're saving people's lives, so they get to wear whatever they damned well please. Take the philanthropic fraternity of the Shriners, for example. The Master Masons can wear tasseled Turkish fezzes and tootle about in tiny cars at parades because their network of 22 nonprofit hospitals treat children with orthopaedic conditions regardless of their guardians' ability to pay. See? Superman stuff. One young Mauian who's been helped by the Shriners is 13-year-old Ocean Langolis—a sparkling, perceptive-beyond-her-years Upcountry girl. Ocean spent the last two years hospitalized on the Mainland—having undergone six surgeries for her congenital short femur—and has finally returned home this week. To express her gratitude, she's spearheaded a benefit to give back to Maui Shriners Transportation and Shriners Hospitals for Children - Honolulu this Saturday at Stella Blues, with a "Tropical Twilight" concert featuring Jimmy Mac and the Kool Kats plus Gail Swanson (as well as a bad-ass auction that includes a Stratocaster signed by the likes of Willie Nelson, the Doobie Brothers, Mick Fleetwood and more). Come out to help this super cause—and the super girl behind it. 808-874-3779; stellablues.com / wickedsistersproduction.com
