Don't know if you've noticed, but geothermal energy is hot, Hot, HOT on Maui. In fact, right now this second, a Nevada company (Reno-based Ormat Technologies), is planning to build a 24 megawatt geothermal energy plant on 100 acres in Kula. The positive side to geothermal energy is well known—namely, it's clean—but the downside is that these plants require deep wells that often disturb ancient Hawaiian sites. To discuss how geothermal energy impacts Native Hawaiians, a group of Native Hawaiian entrepreneurs, consultants, advisers and officials will discuss the many environmental and political issues surrounding geothermal energy in Hawaii. The moderator will be Patricia Brandt, CEO of the Native Hawaiian firm Innovations Development Group, which is developing geothermal projects in New Zealand. ■
