OK. This event isn't until next Friday (August 5), but I'm letting you know a little early because I empathize with recluses who really want to go out, but need a little time to work up the nerve... especially in the case of a party that marries awesomely awkward first encounters and high-pressure spotlight fun.
Gameshow Fanatics (the fine folks who bring us restaurant and event editions of "Game Show Nite") debuts their coolest new concept "The NewlyMet Game," hybridizing speed dating and the classic TV quiz show The Newlywed Game. Team up with a soon-to-be ex-stranger (and if you're lucky, soon-to-be ex-lover) to find out how well you've gotten to know each other during your preliminary mingling.
As ever, the all-original handcrafted sets are professional-looking, polished works of art that help put contestants in the live on-air mood. Plus, they're doling out great 'date' prize giveaways. But what's really winning is enterprising host "Dick Dawson" (i.e. magician Brenton Keith), who embodies all the smarmy charm of old school American TV with his salt and pepper powdered coiffure and dummy microphone.
Keith and crew's charisma can bring even the biggest misanthrope out of the box and up to the podium, get 'em laughing and in this case, maybe even get them laid. [661-0808; gameshowfanatics.com]
