Picks of the Week 6
Zen Archery In Lahaina
|
July 28, 2011 | 08:26 AM (Friday through Sunday) August 5-7, 9am-4pm, Lahaina Jodo Mission, $150
The Tao of Who/whatever (with apologies to Lao Tzu and Pooh). Zen and the Art of Insert Anything here. Annoying, right? But don't let continuous co-opting besmirch the cool stuff; because with regards to the latter, the progenitor of it all is Eugen Herrigel's book Zen in the Art of Archery (1948)–and archery is about as bad ass as it gets. Case in point: Artemis, Cupid, Robin Hood, Legolas et alia. If you want to be bad ass (um, I mean receive total enlightenment or whatever)–and learn from masters like Rick "Jyozen" Beal and Bodhi Hanna–register for next week's (Aug. 5-7) Zen Archery workshop on the West side. The course introduces participants to kyudo (Japanese archery), Zen meditation, plus Hara and Qi Gong breathing exercises. But Beal and Hanna only offer the course annually, so if you miss-out this year you'll have to shoot for the next. 463-9656
