Garden of BE At Iao Theater

In her latest original, The Garden of BE, hip local playwright Tess Cartwright has created an avant garde "world where everything is alive from rocks to birds, a belching volcano and even colors." This Friday (Sept. 16) marks the beginning of audiences' journey into this whimsical realm with The Garden of BE Art Show, created in partnership with Community Work Day Program and in conjunction with the forthcoming play. Locals were invited to submit their original artworks, so long as pieces were created entirely of recycled, reused plastic, and fit a garden theme (i.e. resembling flora, fauna, fairies and what not). At the show, prizes will be awarded to works that demonstrated out-of-the-bottle ways of utilizing diverse textures and types of plastics, and patrons can peruse the collection while getting a glimpse of the show that's in store… Ooh. Ooh! That reminds me: while you're hanging out at the art show, be sure to visit the box office to snag tickets for The Garden of BE, which opens next Friday (Sept. 23 through Oct. 2; running Fridays and Saturdays, 7:30pm; and Sundays, 3pm; $40/$22/$15/$10). Replete with interesting symbology—sourcing from everything from peace signs to ancient runes—the musical is a color-saturated exploration of loving transformation (which all began some 15 years ago with a bleach bottle puppet named Bud Burrid).
