Picks of the Week 3

Kathy Collins At Casanova

Picks3

September 14, 2011 | 12:43 PM
Friday (Sept. 16), 10pm, Casanova (1188 Makawao Ave.); free

Maui maven Kathy Collins is so cool. She's everything from Mana`o Radio's mama, to tap dancing queen, to da Tita entreating us not fo' littah. Whether on the airwaves, stage or bumper stickers, Collins is ever-effervescent, bold and bodacious. This Friday (Sept. 16) she's celebrating her birthday with a big bash at Upcountry's Casanova—but she's the one doling out the gifts. See, she's commissioned her pals The 8 Track Players to headline the night—and there's no cover, complements of the birthday girl. The 8 Track Players—a fun and funky five-man ensemble comprised of Jerry Byer, Phil Ellison, Chris Limos, Gino Morelli and Curtis Williams—have got a knack for lighting a fire under every happy foot; so the house is sure to be hoppin' higher than Homer on a tramapoline... Ooh. Ooh! Be sure to hang out at Casanova 'til Saturday (Sept. 17, 10pm; $15) for Aussie Ganga Giri and his group. Self-described as "mix(ing) red natural elements with fat tribal beats and dirty funky bass lines to create a unique tribal-technological deep earth dance experience...bringing audiences world-wide a reflection of today's multicultural Australia," even Peter Gabriel says, "Ganga is really taking the didjeridu to places it has never been before and developing a unique style of music."
