Pacific Whale Foundation Gives Out Free Chico Bags

October 12, 2011 | 02:25 PM I hate all those horror stories about our precious sea creatures choking to death on plastic trash that's found its way to the sea. Man-made products like plastic bags and six-pack holders are the worst offenders. It's estimated that hundreds of thousands of marine mammals die every year because of encounters with the single-use bag alone.
Pacific Whale Foundation is supporting the Maui County movement to get rid of all plastic bags. They're now offering a free reusable Chico bag with donations of $25 or more to their organization.
Single-use grocery bags are made of polyethylene, a petroleum based product. Though Maui banned them, an astonishing four to five trillion of them are still manufactured each year, with a mere one percent of that getting recycled. These bags take 1,000 years to break down.
Of course, single-use paper bags are just as bad for the planet's forests. It takes 14 million trees to create the 10 million paper bags the U.S. consumes every year.
The Chico bag was designed by a Chico State University graduate Andy Keller, now ChicoBag™ president. They are designed to fold down into a compact, self-contained pouch. They can be carried easily in your pocket, and are strong enough to carry a load.
