Did you know that Blue and Sperm whales travel within Hawaiian waters? If you didn't, then it may be time to brush up on your cetacean knowledge with some upcoming free training offered by Sarah Mesnick, the Science Liaison for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Southwest Fisheries Science Center's Protected Resources Division and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.

Mesnick will discuss research in Sperm whale intelligence, culture, social complexity and life history as well as other cetacean behavior at the Lahaina Civic Center on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 6pm. "Floating in the darkness with the sounds of the hunt from mammals big and small, above and below the water, was magical," said Mesnick. "I am incredibly lucky that my research allows me to spend time with wild animals."

Other community action workshops in this series include:
• Thursday, Oct. 27: "Water Quality Monitoring"
• Tuesday, Nov. 1: "Understanding Maui's Herbivore Enhancement Area"
• Wednesday, Nov. 2: "Volunteering 101"

All sessions begin at 6pm and end by 8pm. There will also be a "Volunteer Networking Potluck" on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Kahekili Beach Park from 9am to noon. For more information or to register go to oceanawarehawaii.org or call 879-2818.
