Picks of the Week 4December 08, 2010 | 03:24 PMby Anuhea YagiIf your weekend is filled with but "butterfly idleness," why not make a themed day of it at the MACC's Sunday night showing of Mark Twain Tonight! with Emmy-winning actor Hal Holbrook? First, "rough it" up to the tip top of mount Haleakala for "the sublimest spectacle" of |

Music SceneFour seasoned players with a fresh moniker prove there's plenty of room for their genre to growSeptember 16, 2010 | 08:53 AMby Anuhea YagiGo ahead — judge The Green by its cover. Amidst the piles of often insipid discs that cross our editorial desks, The Green's 2010 self-titled debut shines like the Honolulu city lights that decorate it (with an original illustration by artist — and childhood friend of the group — Kamea Hadar). But where other artists' albums may |

The summer solstice (June 21), just passed us by, and the days are stretching into the late evening, creating wonderful sunsets (and wicked sunburns). Enjoy these long-lit evenings at the 19th Annual Ki Ho'alu Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival. The word Ki ho'alu means |

Picks of the Week 4Sat./Sun. (January 30-31), Castle Theater, MACCIn 1995, this famed, opera-length hula drama single handedly changed hula's onstage presentation. What is "Holo Mai Pele"? Correct, for $600. Okay, Alex, I'll continue with |

Friday (Nov. 13), Castle Theater, MACC, Kahului, $39/$49/$125I'm fanatic about Filipino pop culture. When The Black Eyed Peas came out with "The Apl Song" and "Bebot," I blasted it from my rice burner's speakers. My heart races when |

Picks of the Week 3Saturday (Nov. 14), Castle Theater, MACC, Kahului, 7:30pm, $45/$65/$75/$125It's a busy weekend at the MACC. As Lea Solanga exits the stage (no doubt to thunderous applause), the venue will immediately begin preparing for the arrival of iconic twosome Loggins & Messina. With a smooth, leisurely sound that helped define the '70s, the duo—which broke up in '76 but reunited in '05— promises to trot out all the hits, from "Your Mama Don't Dance" to "Danny's Song" (which was played at my wedding and has lyrics—"even though we ain't got money…"—that are still all too apropos). And you can bet whatever dollars you've got left after shelling out for a ticket that they'll do a rendition of "Lahaina" ("I was sitting at a table on an open bay/Waiting for a drink of rum/When I asked my waitress for the time of day/She said look out, there's a centipede coming your way…") Whether this show represents a nostalgia-laced trip down memory lane or an introduction, there are worse ways to spend a Saturday night than listening to a couple of legendary pop-rockers rekindle the flame. |
