Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real
Friday-Saturday (September 27-28), 9pm at Charley’s, 142 Hana Hwy., Paia
August 25, 2010
Jacob Shafer
When you hear that a Nelson is set to play Charley’s, we know whose grizzled, twinkling visage you conjure up. Not so fast; we’re talking about the younger Nelson, 21-year-old Lukas. Raised on the road in Willie’s famed Honeysuckle Rose bus, Lukas inherited his father’s gift. But he’s also his own man—and his own musician. And, along with his band, Promise of the Real, he’ll be appearing at the popular Paia watering hole for two shows this weekend. With a sound that’s described as part “American heart’n’soul” with tinges of Latin, blues, country and funk, this is an outfit not be missed. “When ...More

Wine Dinner at Gerards
Friday (September 3), 7pm at Gerard’s Restaurant, 174 Lahainaluna Rd., Lahaina, $75
August 25, 2010
Jen Russo
Dining at Gerard’s is a one-of-a-kind experience; the award-winning contemporary island-French cuisine is unparalleled on Maui. The dining room takes you on a no-ticket-needed trip to New Orleans with its old world charm, veranda and garden tables. Chef Gerard Reversade is recognized as one of our state’s extraordinary culinary masters, and has spent much of his life creating delicacies on the Valley Isle. He doesn’t throw wine dinners very often, so this is an exclusive chance to spend the night immersed in vinatages from the Burgundy region of France, paired with special chef’s selections.
