Better do some more research, MTW. You're thinking of Clarence Earl Gideon, not "Clarence Earl Wainwright." The famous case is Gideon v. Wainwright. Mr. Wainwright was the head of the state prison system that was incarcerating Mr. Gideon at the time. See "Gideon's Trumpet," by Anthony Lewis.
