Correct me If I am wrong...but Grandma Florence turned 100 years old in May of 2008. There was a sign for marriage licenses that I had noticed by my friend's house in Lahaina. Being fairly new to the island, that was the extent of my knowledge. When my time came to seek a marriage, I walked up those plantation house steps. I obtained my marriage license on a Sunday from her in June 2008. Much to her dismay... and with many "dang buggah's", my soon to be husband and I basically begged her to help us. I was on his shoulder's at her window after no answer. He was leaving for Iraq in a matter of days and we were high school sweethearts who had found one another again and were determined to marry before he was deployed. Florence does not work on Sundays...and after her much delayed arrival to the door, reluctance, and instance that it would take awhile, she agreed. I remember thinking, "it can only take moments". After her long questioning, I realized she really was making an accomadation for us. With each.... and every....tap....of the "typewriter"...( remember those?), we both anxiously looked around and saw the letter of congrats from President Bush for her 100th birthday. We were both intimadated by her age and our sudden realiazation of our intrusion. I must tell you though, after all the instructions: write legibly, keep your cash straight in your wallet :), when we finished those papers, she said with such a large and infectious smile "congratulations". Great story that I will treasure for a lifetime. But I really think she was 100 in 2008. :)
