Jason, you could do an entire issue devoted to Ventura-Oliver (or the Hoys).
It is all there on the web.
They also have a long history of lawsuits initiated by them against owners of land on Maui, claiming that the owners are not the real owners because Hawaii is not actually part of the USA (contentious, and a great way to muddy the waters).
They also ran a scam in which they would sell "title" to land to people, thereby telling them that they no longer had to pay their mortgages to BoH or whoever. Usually the result was the owner getting foreclosed on.
