Suggestion worth consideration
November 14, 2011 | 02:24 PM

I do not know if a boycott of the tournament is good for Maui -- I'm sure the people of Maui benefit from the income, entertainment, and publicity or the event -- but Taylor Branch deserves praise for his reasoned report and you deserve applause for taking a strong stand. There seems little doubt any longer that major universities are taking advantage of revenue-producing student athletes. Somehow, otherwise educated officials have deluded themselves into believing that they are acting in the best interests of the athletes. Major college athletics is amateur in name only, or maybe only in the minds of college presidents and athletic directors.

Even more effective than a boycott by Mauians would be a boycott by the athletes. Their refusal to play would cause immediate change in an unjust system.
