print email Source: Editorial: Hawaiian Commercial And Sugar Thanks You For Supporting Cane Burning While Kihei Goes Roundabout Crazy
Crap, This script is choking on ampersands
May 04, 2012 | 12:15 PM

Third time is the charm. This time I won't type in any ampersands.

HCS presents a false choice:

burn cane or develop

They don't mention that most the rest of the world harvests cane without burning.

They also don't mention that they are going to develop regardless of the status of sugar.

They grow sugar for 2 reasons and neither has to do with sugar profitability.

1. It keeps their land inventory at low ag tax rates while they wait for the economy to absorb more development.

2. It allows them to run their coal-fired generator under the lax cogen boiler pollution control rules instead of the more effective pollution control rules that coal-fired generators are required to use.

Look at A(and)B's shareholder filings. They admit that their intention is to develop their ag land as fast as the economy allows.

Proof: They've converted many acres of cane to a Business Park - and they are still burning.

So residents take a hit twice. They breathe cane smoke and get asthma and they breathe coal smoke and get cancer.
