Cane Fields
September 29, 2012 | 12:46 PM

My family and I, while not full time residents, have been enjoying Maui for 40 years. I love the smoke and the smell of the burning sugar cane fields. Maui has already lost the bulk of it's pineapple fields in the name of building and construction. The Honapiilani Highway can be a nightmare at times with its congestion. And now, because a bunch of mainlanders have moved to within the burn of the cane fields, those fires should be extinguished? Did they do any due diligence to realize where they were moving and what the local traditions were? Or did they decide that once they arrived, the Island Paradise would have to change to accomodate their needs and concerns?
