Concrete vs. Bamboo

With all the coverage of the earthquake in China and photos of school kids stuck under giant slabs of concrete, I can't help but think what if they had built their structures of bamboo? Would they collapse? As far as I know bamboo is strong but it has some flex. If the bamboo structures did not hold up, I would much rather be caught under bamboo poles than concrete slabs. Conclusion, Bamboo mo' betta
