WAKE UP! September 19, 2008 | 02:57 PM
When you look at the enormous numbers of people in respect to the very few bad-seeds, Halloween in Lahaina is one of the most successful events possible. The CRC needs to grow up and realize that 1 day of fun each year is not going to destroy the clutural fabric of our island.
Anyone who's participated has felt the infectious jovial spirit created by Halloween. This event is a positive time and has become part of our culture for decades. Or would the CRC prefer we go out and kill some whales? Would that be more intune with our whaling cultural heritage? Or should we enjoy a large party, bringing the people of all the Hawaiian Islands together for one day? Isn't that what the Ali'i in Lahaina was known for?
It seems today that with our slowing economy, special interests are gaining ground and further crippling Maui businesses.
I'll be there again this year and every year that follows. Let's hope the CRC has the sense to permit organization again, and let's also hope that the LAC is willing to take up its crucial role next year.
