After reading today's piece in the Maui News, it is clear that something must change at the plantation, but it is never clear what that might be. they have the numbers on ethanol, which could keep the fields in cane, but there has been no indication from the top execs or the plantation manager that it's a direction they are taking seriously at the moment. And the algae to biodiesel lease surely won't happen by 2011. More and more acres are being leased to Monsanto for GMOs. And they continue to stockpile land-use approvals, but the current lending and spending rates don't make it economical to build.
