Trevor Chavers
Ongoing, at the Kinkade Gallery on Front St., Lahaina

August 04, 2005

[ART] There's something that makes the day a little brighter talking to a happy person. When I called Trevor Chavers, that attitude is exactly what I got. He seems to be in such a good mood that the sun shining is enough to call his day "wonderful." That's the spirit!

Chavers is our local painter in the spotlight this week. He was born in Mississippi, which he thinks may have been a "cruel joke by [his] parents." He grew up in Colorado and California. Then, about 15 years ago, he made it to Maui and has yet to leave. Actually, he's kept to the West Side this entire time.

"I've been privileged to live in beautiful places," he said.

Although Chavers' previous works consisted mainly of school-related paintings, Maui is the place that actually inspired him to "pick up a brush and paint. Seriously paint." His work now is surreal and colorful, producing "more and more to stay in the gallery." Finally, he says, Chavers is being recognized as a real artist.

"I'm on cloud nine," he tells me, after explaining that it hasn't been all fun and games. After previous rejections—some harsh enough to make him question who he is and where he's going—with characteristic optimism, Chavers simply dusted himself off and got back on that horse. Giddyup, Trevor!

So, what's next? For now, the main focus is the Kinkade Gallery. "That's what I'm doing right now because it feels good." A wise decision, I think. Check out this upcoming local artist's work and smile, like I did. [HEIDI KING]
