Maui's own James Perlman hasn't quite achieved that distinction, but he's not far off. Set to attend 10th grade at Seabury Hall this year, Perlman is what music fans refer to as a child prodigy. A bassoonist, he's already soloed with the Honolulu Symphony, appeared on National Public Radio's From the Top program and has won the Honolulu Symphony Concerto Competition. This Saturday, as part of the finale concert of the Maui Classical Music Festival, he and Maui Music Conservatory owner Ruther Murata Eisen will play Weber's Andante and Hungarian Rondo for Bassoon and Piano. There'll be some Mozart and Schumann thrown in there too, I think, but Perlman's sure to be the evening's showcase performance. Waiola Congregational Church is located at 535 Waine'e St. in Lahaina. Tickets are $20. For more information call 879-4908 or visit www.maui-cmf.org. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO] |
