As an avid fan of Maui Time, and bringing it to Hana for years, I would like to share some light and delight of Hamoa Beach. The service drive is exactly that, servicing emergency vehicles, police and fire, which has been utilized many times ("Road No Longer Traveled, May 10, 2007).
Hotel Hana-Maui also offers a hotel shuttle service (to drop off and pick up) guests, also deliver food and supplies, [if] needed. It needs the accessibility for the engineering and landscaping to fix, maintain and beautify the hotel-owned land, there is limited space.
Within ADA guidelines, the drive has been opened for assistance with individuals whom are disabled, and other special circumstances. Imagine an ambulance or rescue vehicle being blocked in or out for public access.
Hamoa Beach is truly one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawai'i and a swim at Hamoa is always on my "must do" list whenever I visit Hana. Liliana Begley's article in your May 10th issueE("Road No Longer Traveled") was an eye-opener!
As far as I can remember, and I originally moved to Hana to live in 1969, there have always been questions about the public's access to the beach. Since Hana Ranch and Hotel Hana-Maui have gone through several changes in ownership over the years, it may be time for the County of Maui and the state to step in and officially condemn a right of way to Hamoa.
Owners come and go and their policies are like the ocean: ever-changing. I don't want to go to Hamoa this summer and be told, "Sorry, we changed the rules. You may not walk down our pathway and you certainly may not use our access road. We suggest you swim in from the point."
Wait a minute—wasn't the point sold by the hotel's present owners, too? Along with the pastures fronting the ocean to Lehoula Beach? And how about Maka'alae? Hana's coastline is going to be posted with big "NO TRESPASSING" signs... This means me... and you... and your children... and their children, too.EAuwe.
So what's the deal with you guys bashing the Hotel Hana-Maui one week and then gushing over their restaurant the next ("For the Love of Pumpkin," May 17, 2007)? Forgive me, but that looked a little odd.

The Editor explains: Believe it or not, it looked odd to us, too. But it was just random chance. In fact, the reporters for both pieces happened to be at Hotel Hana-Maui on the same day, covering their respective stories, and didn't even know it.
