MPD Talks Story With LCon the Triangle

At the very end of the June 13, 2007 Maui County Liquor Commission agenda, past the preliminary hearings, public hearings, general licensing matters, "other" licensing matters and administrative affairs, are the words "Kihei Kalama Villages." It's unusual to see the name of one of the biggest concentrations of liquor licensees on the island—home to LuLu's, Life's a Beach, South Shore Tiki Lounge, Dog & Duck Pub, Bada Bing and the soon-to-open Ambrosia—at the close of an otherwise routine meeting agenda, and it's potentially a very big deal.
"The police actually contacted us," county Liquor Control Director Franklyn Silva told me when I asked about the item. "It's kind of a talk story thing. They want to talk to the commission."
According to Silva, the Maui PD have grown concerned about a number of assaults in Kihei Kalama Villages, known locally as "the Triangle"—so concerned that they want to talk to the LC about it. Silva said his department will invite the property's managers as well as all the liquor licensees to the hearing.
"My people are telling me that most of the people [doing the alleged assaulting] are coming in from the outside," Silva said. "By that I mean people aren't coming from the bars and causing trouble, but that they're coming from surrounding areas and assaulting patrons. We don't know this for certain, which is why we're having this talk story."
What happens beyond that is difficult to say. The Liquor Commission has a fair number of options, ranging from doing nothing to scheduling a public hearing on the possibility of limiting the Triangle's licensees' nightly hours. In any case, there will certainly be a lot to talk about at the June 13 hearing.
