Free Beer!
Saturday (July 21), 4-11 p.m. at Campbell Park in Lahaina

July 19, 2007

[FILM, FOOD, MUSIC] Okay, not really free beer. But it's free films! MauiFEST Hawai`i is back, and on the Westside this year, with premier films, local musicians and lots of food, fun and crafts. Unlike that other annual film festival, this celebration of Hawaiian culture is free to all, leaving you no excuse not to spend the evening watching movies like Heart of a Soul Surfer (the Bethany Hamilton saga) or Ki Ho`alu ("Loosen the Key"), a recent Emmy winner on slack key guitar player Keola Beamer. Also for your under-the-stars viewing pleasure will be Joy Ride, (an extreme boogie boarding flick), Sharks, Stewards of the Reef, Hawai`i, Message in the Waves, The Shimmering–another Keola Beamer story–and three New Zealand films: Very Nice Honeymoon, Two Cars-One Night and Hawaikii. If that's not enough to keep you entertained all day, expect to be graced with performances by Grammy Award-winning artists John Keawe and Dennis Kamakahi, jazz legend Mel Martin, hula dancing from `Ulalena performers, and more. Just too much fun to list! To top it all off, local radio personality Uncle Boy Kanae will be mastering all that is ceremonious, and there will be lots of good, local food available, so show up with lawn chairs and blankets but leave mama's famous macaroni salad in the cooler at home. Did I mention it's free? Campbell Park is located on Front Street between Wharf Cinema Center and Baldwin House Museum. For info visit www.mauifest.net. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]
