MONOPOLY?
Alexander & Baldwin rises this week on news that the stevedore company McCabe, Hamilton & Renny (MHR) is suing A&B's subsidiaries Matson Navigation Co. and Matson Terminals Inc. for allegedly trying to monopolize the state's longshoremen. MHR's filing, according to the Feb. 23 Honolulu Advertiser, alleges that Matson's hiring practices would put MHR out of business. What's more, MHR alleges that Matson used "confidential information or trade secrets" to lure workers away from MHR. Even if the suit is groundless—Matson officials deny trying to monopolize anything or anyone—it's still complete affirmation of the company's power. MHR isn't suing Young Brothers or Horizon—they're suing Matson, and that speaks volumes about how the competition sees A&B's subsidiary.

And the construction firm Goodfellow moves out of the cellar after last week's little realignment of the South Kihei Road-Pi'ilani Highway interchange in Kihei. The intersection is nowhere near done, but there's no question that Goodfellow's people are doing something. And on Maui, that's quite an accomplishment. MTW
