What could possibly be better than a night of fights and fashion? Stizar Custom Apparel is launching their brand new Summer 2008 line–Hard Candy–during intermission with a lingerie and swimsuit fashion show. That means that there will be lots of hot girls in panties doing more than holding bout cards. I was able to check out some Hard Candy designs and they are smokin' but at the same time totally wearable. The funny thing is that while I do love fashion, it's my husband that's completely ecstatic over the idea of being ringside for the event. And I have a sneaking suspicion that it has nothing to do with having a close-up view of the fighters. Tickets: $30 in advance, $35 at the door. Available at Ainokea. www.stizarhawaii.com [STARR BEGLEY] Mraz Attacks Thursday (May 1) 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater, MACC [MUSIC] Jason Mraz is a geek. Not the strange, awkward kind that make you uncomfortable to be nearby, but more like one of those geeks you want to get to know because he's just so proud to be a geek. He even sported a Pepto-Bismol-colored tee in a music video for "The Geek in Pink." Mraz was a cheerleader in high school in the Richmond, Virginia suburbs and he likes to wear strange hats over his curly hair, hang out at home and do his own laundry. But what Mraz is really about is catchy music with clever lyrics and stripped-down sounds. He's recorded three albums, one of which went platinum, but the newest one hasn't been released yet. We Sing We Dance We Steal Things is the album the world's still waiting to get it's hands on, but "I'm Yours," the hit single from it, has already saturated the airwaves and gotten permanently stuck in my head. Tickets: $35, $30, $25. 242-7469. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG] May Day Mania Thursday-Saturday 9:45 p.m, 10 p.m., Casanova, Makawao [MUSIC] Leave it to the Upcountry Italians to go balls to the wall for May Day weekend entertainment. Guess which two Maui musicians are back on the slopes of Haleakala! I'll give you a hint: they both have big hair and are local celebrities. More? One is a big Hawaiian guy and the other one is our reggae ambassador. That's right—Willie K and Marty Dread will perform at Casanova. Willie will take the stage Thursday night at 9:45 p.m. and Marty is all about Friday at 10 p.m. Also, Dr. Nat and Rio Ritmo will be playing on Saturday with special guests Rosana Peixote and Alsha Kahlil (Sweet Honey on the Rock.) You don't want to miss any of these gigs. I wonder if Casanova will sell weekend passes? Tickets: Thu, Fri $10; Sa $15 or $10 if you are a Taurus. For more info call 572-0220. Hawaiian Music Kings Friday (May 2) 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater, MACC [MUSIC] The words "Hawaiian contemporary music"and the Brothers Cazimero are pretty much synonymous. These guys have been creating and performing together for over 30 years and have had a major hand in shaping the sounds of the islands. Their newest album, Some Call it Aloha, Don't Tell, was nominated for a Grammy in 2004. With only two classical instruments—a stand up bass and a 12-string guitar—Robert and Roland have released 37 recordings and three DVDs that combine their majestic music with amazing visuals from Hawaiian culture. Their live shows always honor their heritage by incorporating hula and chants. Of course, it doesn't hurt that they've got really friendly faces, with warm smiles and happy eyes that make the whole audience feel like family. Tickets: $40, $30, $10. 242-7469. [JA] Cinco de Mayo Madness Various dates and locations across the island [CELEBRATION] You should have seen the look on Maui Time Calendar Editor Jessica Armstrong's face when I asked, "Cinco de Mayo—that's on the fifth, right?" Sorry, but I've been too busy celebrating May Day to get into the whole Cinco de Mayo thing. But there are a whole lot of you who love it, so here's the skinny: First, check out The Grid for tips on venues doing something special. Second, mark you calendar for Friday, May 2 from 10 p.m-2 a.m. and then check out the Jammin De Mayo Fiesta 3, a pre-Cinco de Mayo celebration with go-go dancers, shake the culo and limbo contests hosted by The Big Hawaiian Kila Kila and Shaggy over at Hard Rock Café. And last but not least, make some time to head over to Fred's, which I've heard has one of the biggest fiestas around. [SB] |
