The Year in Covers
The Art Directors speak!

December 24, 2009

1. This cover was one of my favorites to create. A few simple photos of the burial site and the juxtaposition of a bulldozer made for an immediate—and heartbreaking—image. - Brittany Shaw, former Art Director

2. After much deliberation with the editorial staff about how to make yet another Superferry story feel fresh, we finally settled on the most obvious and eye-catching solution. The big red 'F' was actually a last-minute addition that brought the whole thing together. - BS

3. "Whose idea was that?" This concept—based around an intentionally cheesy Photoshop job pasting LC Director Frank Silva's head on John Travolta's body—was sort of an Art Director's nightmare. However, it ended up striking a good balance between humor and righteousness and became a weeklong roast of the LC. - BS

4. I originally took the photo for this cover while I was enjoying a visit to the summit with my boyfriend. I wanted the design to look like a mix between sci-fi and National Geographic, so I merged the photo of the sunrise and pre-existing photo of the observatory and added some typographical flourishes to complete the effect. - BS

5. This was the first cover after the redesign. I was really excited about helping take MauiTime in a new direction, and I think this new look accomplishes that, while also lining up with the transition to more Web content. - Chris Skiles, Art Director

6. Our Halloween issue was my introduction to how seriously Mauians take their politics (and politicians). The cover caused quite a stir—which was what we were hoping for. Some said it was too much, and it may have overshadowed the story a bit, but in the end I defend this design—it was Halloween! - CS

7. This cover strikes a very personal chord. Anu was rushed to the hospital and hadn't yet finished her story, so I was kind of flying blind. Amazingly, we were on the same page and the design ended up matching her story more perfectly than we could have planned. - CS
