Between February 28 and March 5, nine U.S. soldiers were killed in Afghanistan, including Hawaii-based Staff Sgt. Mark C. Wells who died "of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device" in the Helmand province, per a Defense Department release. According to the San Jose Mercury News (the daily from Wells's hometown) he leaves behind a two-year-old son and pregnant wife.

That's serious business—or not if you listen to a recent exchange between Gen. David Petreaus and Defense Secretary Robert Gates (pictured) , caught by news cameras after Gates landed at Kabul Airport. "Welcome back, sir," said Petreaus. "You're flying a little bigger plane than normal—you gonna launch some attacks on Libya or something?"

To which Gates laughed and replied, "Yeah, exactly."
